The project involved an 8.1-mile extension of the Newark Bay-Hudson County Line, from Interchange 14 in Newark to Jersey Avenue in Jersey City. This program consisted of four independent projects. Project 1 spanned from Interchange 14 in Newark to Interchange 14A in Bayonne, including Vincent R. Casciano Bridge over Newark Bay. Project 2 involved the construction of the new East and West viaducts for mainline corridor and ramps between Interchange 14A and 14B. Project 3 and 4 involved the reconstruction of viaduct/bridge structures from Interchange 14B to Jersey Avenue.
YU & Associates, Inc. (YU) provided geotechnical inspection services for the Newark Bay Hudson County Extension Bridge Replacement and Capacity Enhancements Program. YU’s responsibilities included inspection of both land and offshore borings for the subsurface investigation program, and preparation of boring logs and well logs in gINT. YU also coordinated the soil and rock laboratory testing assignments, handled the delivery of soil samples and rock cores, reviewed soil/rock laboratory test results, and updated boring logs with laboratory test results.
In addition to standard boring inspections, YU provided inspection for in-situ testing, including ATV/OTV logging, Pressuremeter Tests, P-S Logging, groundwater monitoring well installation, undisturbed sampling and hammer calibration. YU supported the preparation of geotechnical data reports summarizing the findings from the borings, in-situ tests, and soil/rock laboratory test results. Our team provided drilling inspections for more than 100 geotechnical borings, ensuring adherence to project specifications and safety standards. This comprehensive geotechnical support was vital for providing data necessary for the project’s design and construction phases.
