YU & Associates, Inc. (YU) was retained to be the Geotechnical Engineer for the proposed athletic field improvements to be constructed at Kean University. The project included expansion of existing bleachers at the Alumni Field and construction of a 2-story Concession/Weight Training building, a new softball field with bleachers and dugouts, and new bleachers for the existing baseball field. YU performed a subsurface investigation and evaluation to develop foundation recommendations, design criteria and construction requirements related to foundation, earthwork, and other geotechnical aspects of the proposed construction.
A total of 16 borings were drilled to define the subsurface conditions, which consisted of fill material placed over heterogeneous glacial deposit of silt, sand and gravel that overlay weathered shale, mudstone and siltstone. Foundation recommendations included footings bearing on existing fill subgrade compacted to provide a design bearing capacity of 4 kips per square foot. Other geotechnical design parameters and site preparation procedures were developed and provided in the geotechnical report.
