Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail transit system (HBLRTS) includes construction of 20.5 miles of new light rail transit system with numerous stations, bridges, viaducts, retaining walls, overhead catenary power systems, operating systems, and its equipment maintenance facilities. The system will run from its southern terminus in Bayonne through Jersey City, Hoboken, and Weehawken to its northern terminus in Ridgefield Park. The system also includes a western spur branching from the central line in the area of the Liberty Science Center extending west to Route 440 in Jersey City.
Yu & Associates, Inc. (YU) has provided geotechnical related services for both the Preliminary Design Phase and the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) Phases of the project. During the Preliminary Design Phase, YU performed subsurface investigation, which involved soil drilling, rock coring, installation of observation wells, and performance of field vane shear and Packer tests. Subsurface soils and rock included miscellaneous fill, peat, marine clay, sand, glacial till, and bedrock of diabase, sandstone and serpentine.
During the DBOM Phase, YU conducted final boring/test pit investigations, engineering analyses, design and evaluation, alternative studies and value engineering, geotechnical design reports, and construction supports. Technical tasks included lateral support analyses, retaining wall design, underpinning design, soil and rock slope stabilization, settlement evaluation, surcharge and wick drain design, use of lightweight fill for stress compensation, and shallow and deep foundation evaluation.
