A new 14-story along with 5-story condominium building was constructed in Cliff side Park, New Jersey with a desirable New York City and Empire State Building views. The lot has a plan area about 2.4 acres and is on the top of Palisade ridge.
As a geotechnical consultant, YU & Associates (YU) provided several geotechnical engineering services. The subsurface investigation included drilling 6 borings and excavating 8 supplemental test pits.
The site contained a boulder stone (diabase) wall and a 300 feet long steep rock cliff. YU recommended to conduct rock blasting for rock removal, a method considered the most economical and quickest approach for rock removal. YU prepared rock blasting monitoring plan and monitored test blasting program. The major challenge of the project was to obtain rock blasting permit from Cliff side Park Township and YU assisted the owner to get the permit. YU performed a pre-construction inspection for commercial/residential properties within 300 feet radius of proposed rock blasting prior to construction. A test rock blasting was conducted under YU’s geotechnical engineer’s supervision, and the productive rock blasting was conducted thereafter and last for 9 months. Attenuation analysis was performed based on empirical equations to predict ground vibration and airblast overpressure.
