The redevelopment and revitalization of Martin Luther King (MLK) Drive is tied to the successful establishment of a vibrant community commercial center, or "hub." As envisioned by the residential and business population, this hub serves as a major new activity center and showplace for the MLK community. The key concept of the MLK Hub District is to develop a mix of uses, including commercial, civil, cultural, and residential, which will reinforce each other. Development is concentrated on a 6 block, 18-acre site situated along MLK Drive between Virginia and Orient Avenues. The development includes 92,000 s.f. retail, 13,000 s.f. landscape plaza, and 5,500 s.f. church. Formerly most of the land in this neighborhood was vacant, and many of the remaining structures are abandoned or deteriorated.
YU & Associates (YU) was retained to provide site engineering and geotechnical design services for the project including the preparation of construction documents (site plan drawings and specifications), Stromwater drainage and management design, sanitary sewer design, cost estimating and regulatory permitting. YU also provided construction inspection services for the site preparation contract.
